- SHOCK (Unconsciousness, Fainting)
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Signs to look for:
-
- Victim feels weak and restless, and is unresponsive
-
- The pulse is fast (over 100 beats/minute), but weak
-
- Breathing is irregular, or deep
-
- The face is pale, and the skin feels cold and damp to touch.
-
- Forehead and palms are sweaty
-
- The victim is experiencing chills, and possibly nausea.
-
- Someone who is already in shock is silent, limp, motionless. The pulse
- is weak, the breathing is inadequate and pupils are dilated.
-
-
- Immediate Treatment:
-
- 1. Send for emergency medical help.
-
- 2. Check and maintain an open airway, restore breathing and circulation.
- Take steps to treat the cause of the shock.
-
- 3. Have the victim lie flat, and keep calm and quiet
-
- 4. Cover to keep from losing body heat, but do not make the victim too
- warm.
-
- 5. Raise the victim's feet slightly to help blood get to the heart and
- brain, UNLESS there are head or leg injuries.
